How Cigna PPO Covers Nutrition Counseling
Cigna recognizes that tailored nutrition care is an essential component of disease prevention and chronic condition management. Most commercial PPO and employer-sponsored Cigna plans include direct benefits for registered dietitian services:
Preventive & Diagnostic Coverage ($0 Copay Potential): Many Cigna PPO plans cover nutrition counseling under preventive care guidelines or diagnostic medical therapy. Eligible plans offer sessions at 100% coverage ($0 copay, $0 coinsurance, and no deductible applied).
Flexible Visit Allowances: Depending on your specific employer group policy, Cigna PPO plans often grant a generous allocation of visits per calendar year—ranging from unlimited preventive sessions to fixed visit tiers (e.g., 3, 6, 10, or 20 sessions per year).
100% Virtual Telehealth Visits: Cigna covers secure video appointments with in-network dietitians at the exact same benefit level as traditional in-person office visits.
Seamless Nationwide Access: Whether your plan is issued locally or through a national employer out of state, direct in-network billing applies as long as your dietitian is contracted with Cigna in your state of residence.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Verify Your Cigna Benefits
We recommend calling Cigna Member Services before your first visit to confirm your plan details:
Call Member Services: Dial the telephone number listed on the back of your Cigna member ID card. Ask to speak with a representative regarding Outpatient Nutrition Counseling / Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT).
Provide CPT Procedure Codes: Ask if your plan covers CPT codes 97802 (Initial Assessment, 15-min increments) and 97803 (Re-evaluation/Follow-up, 15-min increments).
Confirm Preventive vs. Diagnostic Coverage: Ask: "Is nutrition counseling covered as a preventive benefit under diagnostic code Z71.3 (Dietary Counseling)? Is there a $0 copay or deductible requirement?"
Confirm Visit Limits: Ask how many nutrition sessions your plan allows per calendar year (e.g., unlimited, 3, 6, 10, or combined limits).
Confirm Telehealth Eligibility: Ask: "Are virtual/telehealth visits (CPT codes with modifier 95 or place of service 02) covered at the same rate as in-person visits?"
Save Your Reference Number: Write down the representative’s name, the date, and the call reference number for your personal records.
